OVERALL PERSONALITY:
Despite what may be apparent, the Dark Lord is rather straight forward and thus easy to please. If he gives a task, one has but to fulfill their duty to earn the Dark Lord’s pleasure. Incompetency is among the most irritating quality Voldemort can find in his followers, whom he treats with as much mercy as he would his enemies. The Dark Lord’s patience for trivial matters sways in accordance to his mood, for it is possible for him to be both lenient and wrathful toward failures. That being said, Lord Voldemort finds particular interest in over achievers, and values individualism, if only in personality. For example, Voldemort finds Bellatrix Lestrange’s eagerness to fulfill her duty charming, and her success in such as aspect both pleases and interests him. Despite this, failure among his favored is not tolerated, for disappointment is a dangerous thing to evoke in Tom. Such feelings of disappointment lend to his more sadistic nature, where punishment is duly deserved and dealt. The Dark Lord detests all weaknesses and signs of weaknesses, wherein he often will restrain his emotions publicly until that time in which he acts. Despite his mostly serious demeanor with his followers, Voldemort is capable of humor, even twisted as it is. He often finds humor in the feeble and weak, even in those that he considers ruled by the lesser emotions such as love and compassion.
As a leader, Lord Voldemort is a skilled tactician and dueler capable of demanding great respect while instilling tremendous fear. His primary knowledge includes only magic and other such subjects that he deems of value, and so in some aspects, he lacks a full use of his education. Despite his followers, Voldemort is extremely independent. He detests relying on means other than himself for survival, and thus decided to create his horcruxes as extensions of himself. Voldemort is pathologically narcissistic, a diagnosis no doubt stemming from his prodigal magical beginnings and extreme sense of being a self-made legend. His leadership stops at command and turns into something of dominance over his loyal followers. Lord Voldemort understands the importance of the pureblood lines, but will sacrifice any of his followers willingly if it serves his ultimate goal of power. Despite this, Lord Voldemort can also be very charismatic—he is skilled in both the passive and impassive ways of coercion. When he was younger, more passive methods helped to sustain his public image; however, with the first wizarding war and his frightening status due to which many fear to speak his name, more drastic methods have been employed. In the way of good and evil, Lord Voldemort sees neither. Everything is grouped into power, and those too weak to seek it.
Voldemort suffers with extreme obsessions, which more often than not are linked together. His current obsession with Harry Potter’s death is justified by his obsession with immortality. He fears that Harry threatens such a goal, coupled with the shame of ‘defeat’ at the hands of the boy as a young toddler. Though Voldemort often admits his mistakes aloud, as if speaking to those he might trust where he not the Dark Lord, he rarely, if ever, learns from them. As far as fear is concerned, Voldemort is as susceptible as any other man. The difference with Voldemort is that he is capable of masking and overcoming most of his fears, the one exception being his own death. The Dark Lord is also a terrible and selfish liar, though he does have moments where he is willing to keep his word. These moments, however, are rare and far between. Despite his selfishness, Lord Voldemort is capable of acknowledging the desires of others, as long as their desires do not interfere with his own.

OVERALL HISTORY:
After the incident, Tom realized it was no longer safe to open the Chamber of Secrets. Having discovered the possibility of creating horcrux previously, Tom infused a piece of his soul into a diary using the death of Myrtle so that, one day, another might finish Salazar Slytherin’s “noble work”. That same summer, Tom went in search of more information regarding his mother’s family. Using his middle name, Marvolo, which he was aware was given to him after his maternal grandfather, Tom located the Gaunt family and traveled to Little Hangleton in hopes of learning more. Upon arrival, Tom discovered his uncle Morfin Gaunt, who immediately confused Tom for his father. When Tom questioned Morfin regarding his father, intrigued that he had found a living connection, Morfin revealed that his mother had disgraced the family for this muggle. Tom became immediately infuriated and sought revenge for his pureblooded side through destroying the Riddle line. And so he did— he gained his revenge through murdering his fraternal grandparents along with his own father with the Killing Curse. In an effort to cover up his crimes, Tom altered Morfin’s memory so that his uncle believed he had killed the Riddle line out of anger. When the Ministry came looking for the culprit, Morfin Gaunt freely admitted to their murders and was sentences to life in Azkaban. As a sort of trophy for his triumph, Tom took the family signet ring from Morfin and commenced to wearing it about Hogwarts. Such a material habit had started in the orphanage, though Tom was amused to discover this had been the first return of old habits. It did not bother him though, and so he found himself collecting ‘trophies’ from many of his triumphs in the future.
During his seventh and final year at Hogwarts, Tom was regarded as one of the most brilliant wizards to ever attend Hogwarts. It was in this final year that Tom, pleased but not satisfied by the promise of life after death by a single separate object, set out to research more about the nature of horcruxes. Though he knew he would live on if his body were to be destroyed, Tom continued to fear death. He wishes now to be immortal in all aspects, impossible to destroy and never able to die. Therefore, Tom went to his potions professor, Professor Slughorn, who he had completely charmed along with the rest of his professors. Tom proceeded then to question Slughorn until he revealed that one could very well create more than one horcrux, but it was a terrible deed to do and price to pay for such an action. Tom thought little of the consequences, and indeed had no issue with performing the deed of murder in order to split his soul. His desire for immortality and lack of human compassion made him into a monster, bent on insuring his own survival above others. Having discovered the terrible truth, Tom sought to make another horcrux in the form of Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem. He went and charmed her into telling him its location before leaving Hogwarts as a fully fledged wizard. Despite having finished, Tom recognized Hogwarts as his first and only home. He would never return to the orphanage, and did not possess a house of his own yet. Therefore, Tom requested the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor from Headmaster Dippet. He was denied the position on account of his age, but was invited to reapply in a few years, were he still interested. Irritated, Tom set his sights on another of his desires—the diadem.
The diadem was located in Albania, where Tom murdered an Albanian citizen to split his soul for the second time to create his second horcrux. The pain of splitting one’s soul was excruciating, though Tom felt it was worth it to insure he never died. Upon his return to London, Tom was offered several positions in the Ministry of Magic, all of which he declined so that he may instead work at Borgin and Burkes located in Knockturn Alley. This was so that he could coax rare and magical items from their owners without serious suspicion, which, in fact, he was very good at. After having made friends with an elderly Hepzibah Smith, Tom was shown her most precious artifacts—Slytherin’s locket and Hufflepuff’s cup. To possess these objects, Tom murdered the old woman and framed her elderly house elf by implanting a false memory. He was never caught or suspected, having resigned his position at Borgin and Burkes and fled for many years. By murdering Hepzibah and a muggle tramp, Tom made both artifacts into his third and fourth horcrux without regret. After ten years, Tom returned to Hogwarts, distorted and openly using the name ‘Lord Voldemort’, to request the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. His intention was to learn more of Hogwart’s secrets and, in the process, recruit followers for his army. When Dumbledore, the new headmaster, refused him on grounds of his suspicion, Tom cursed the position so that no teacher ever held the position for more than a year, normally due to some sort of humiliation or terrible fate. Despite his failed acquisition of the teaching position, Tom found use of this visit to Hogwarts. While wondering the halls, he was able to hide Ravenclaw’s diadem safely within the Room of Requirements, where he truly believed no one would ever find it.
Come the 1970s, Lord Voldemort had amassed an impressive army of Death Eaters, all driven to follow him either from lust for power, fear, or true belief. They inspired chaos and mass destruction under his command, killing any and all with the use of the Unforgivable curses. To be a Death Eater meant possible death in battle and definite death if caught. Their lives were difficult and often stressful, though Voldemort hardly felt compassion for their plights. Those who were among his favorite sometimes received consideration or attention from him, but others were lucky for their master to know their name. Alongside the Death Eaters were recruits of several races, for Voldemort was aware of the oppression given to werewolves, giants, and even vampires. Such recruiting is still, twenty years later, taking place to great effect. During this dark era of death and destruction, many were scared to even mutter Voldemort’s name, replacing it with pseudonyms such as ‘You-Know-Who’ and ‘He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named’. This not only pleased the Dark Lord, but convinced him to retain fear as a source of ultimate and mass control. Such a use had been mildly implemented as a child, but now it served him as a greater tool in his mission for blood purity and power. It was in this era that the Order of the Phoenix arose to oppose him. Voldemort was somewhat aware of their presence and their purpose, but he paid little attention to them, assuming they were of little threat for the time being. Sadly, at the end of the decade, half a prophecy depicting the Dark Lord’s demise was overheard at the Hog’s Head Inn by Severus Snape, one of the Dark Lord’s Death Eaters. This partial message was relayed to Voldemort himself, which immediately enraged the wizard into taking action to prevent it.
The prophecy could have pertained to either Harry Potter or Neville Longbottom, for both families and both little boys fit the prophecy’s description. However, because Lord Voldemort identified more with the former for his lineage, he sought out Harry Potter with the assistance of Peter Pettigrew to prevent his own demise later on. His logic was simple—eliminate the problem presently and avoid the result later. Upon arrival at the Potter’s, Voldemort commenced to letting himself in and set to murdering James and Lily Potter simply for being in the way. He hardly drew enough anger for their participation in the Order of the Phoenix to seek them out specifically, though destroying part of the resistance did please him to a point. Upon Severus’ request, Voldemort offered Lily mercy not once but twice, if she would simply leave the home without her son directly. She refused of course, and Voldemort was forced to force her removal. Though he did give Lily Potter two chances for survival, the Dark Lord was slightly saddened he could not give Severus his request. The loss of her life meant little to him, but Severus was one of his most trusted, most loyal Death Eaters, and Voldemort had sought to repay him for such. After Lily’s death, Voldemort had turned to the young Harry Potter and attempted to kill him immediately. The killing curse rebound due to Lily Potter’s sacrifice and, in return, destroyed the Dark Lord’s powers and body. There was no possible way Voldemort could have known Lily’s love for her son would have been his downfall, for he had no tangible understanding of love and its power. The first downfall of the Dark Lord lead to widespread persecution of his Death Eaters—many of whom claimed they had been under the Imperius curse. Among the families to stay loyal to Voldemort was the Lestrange family, who were rewarded for their loyalty with imprisonment in Azkaban.
Having lost his physical form, Lord Voldemort retreated to the Albanian forests in wait for his loyal Death Eaters to find him. To keep a physical form, he often possessed snakes, though their bodies were quickly slain due to his presence. It was later his intention to use the Philosopher’s stone to return him to his physical form, which he planned to attain by possessing Professor Quirrell of Hogwarts. When Quirrell was destroyed by Harry Potter, who had attained the stone by sheer wish of attaining it but not using it, Voldemort was infuriated and forced to flee without a body once again. Later, Death Eater Lucius Malfoy discovered Voldemort’s horcrux-diary and gave it to Ginny Weasley to bring to Hogwarts. The sixteen-year-old soul piece of Tom Riddle encased within drained the young witch’s energy and used her to open the Chamber of Secrets once again. Eventually, Harry Potter took possession of Riddle’s diary and found his way into the Chamber of Secrets in time to save Ginny Weasley from total possession. Using a fang from Riddle’s basilisk, Potter then destroyed the diary, thus destroying one of Tom’s seven horcruxes. At this point, Voldemort had returned to the Albanian forests, awaiting another’s help back to his body. Wormtail, or rather Peter Pettigrew, was the one to return to Voldemort next. Together, they built a temporary body in which the Dark Lord could perform magic and move about, but he was forced to resort to desperate measures to sustain such a body. Knowing the Philosopher’s stone to be destroyed by Dumbledore, Riddle was forced to return to the objective of restoring his old body to full power. To do this, he returned to England to begin collecting the ingredients necessary to perform the piece of Dark Magic.
After learning from Ministry official Bertha Jorkins of Barty Crouch Jr.’s whereabouts, the Dark Lord went to the Crouch estate and freed his Death Eater from his father’s influence. With Barty Crouch Jr. free, the Dark Lord ordered him to take Alastor Moody’s place as Defense Against the Dark Arts professor using polyjuice potion, which he did. He also insured that Harry Potter would be the first to reach the Triwizard Cup, which had been made into a portkey. Unfortunately, Cedric Diggory touched the cup at the same time and both were transported to a cemetery in Little Hangleton, where Voldemort was waiting. Wormtail killed Cedric and tied Harry Potter to the Riddle Family tombstone, where he completed the ceremony for Voldemort’s revival using his blood, Harry Potter’s blood, and the Dark Lord’s father’s bones. After his revival, Riddle called upon his Death Eaters and then proceeded to duel Harry Potter. Their wands locked, however, in priori incantatem before Harry Potter grabbed Cedric Diggory’s body and escaped using the portkey. The following year, many of Voldemort’s most loyal Death Eaters escaped Azkaban and returned to his side, later assisting him in retrieving the original prophecy from the Department of Mysteries. Using his telepathic link with Harry Potter, Voldemort convinced the boy to come to the Department of Mysteries, where he brought along many of the members included in Dumbledore’s Army. They came on the grounds of rescuing Sirius Black, who they believed to be trapped there. Death Eaters swamped the children after Harry Potter had retrieved the prophecy from its shelf, after which a battle ensued. During this battle, the prophecy was destroyed. Once Voldemort had discovered this, he appeared with intentions of killing Potter once more. Dumbledore appeared to thwart his efforts, and so the Dark Lord attempted to possess Harry, hoping the old headmaster would kill the boy in his efforts to kill Voldemort himself. Unexpectedly, Harry was able to eject Voldemort from his mind. When Ministry officials began to arrive, Voldemort grabbed Bellatrix Lestrange and disappeared while the rest of his Death Eaters were sent to Azkaban.
With the beginning of the Second Wizarding War, Voldemort acquired the loyalty of the Azkaban dementors and giants. That same summer, the Dark Lord inducted one Draco Malfoy into his Death Eater ranks and ordered the boy to kill Albus Dumbledore. Knowing this was impossible for Draco, Voldemort ordered it of him anyway as a punishment for Lucius’ failings. Meanwhile, the Dark Lord ordered his other Death Eaters to retrieve the Ministry’s registry of current werewolves. When Rabastan Lestrange succeeded in this task, the Dark Lord immediately began to recruit the oppressed werewolves, putting them under Fenrir’s general command. Fenrir, however, is given orders directly from Voldemort himself and is watched closely for any signs of turning against the Dark Lord. While he is recruiting werewolves for his army, Voldemort is also continuing to recruit loyal wizards and even vampires. With his multi-racial army, Voldemort is gearing up for the crumbling of the Ministry. His Death Eaters are attacking muggles, not concerned with secrecy, and causing complete havoc in the wizarding world. The world, tossed into such confusion and death, is ripe for the turn of the century, and Lord Voldemort is sure to succeed.
