Katie hated the library. Abhorred, even. Despised! Any synonym for hate - she felt it, twenty fold, for the library. The smell made her feel ill - all those books, moldy and old, and all those unshowered studiers - and the walls made her feel claustrophobic - she much preferred being outside. But Katie, as much as she loathed the library, needed to study, and badly. She needed to study what she should have studied the year previous, else she was definitely going to fail Potions. She'd only just managed to pass the year before. The subject just held no interest for her; she didn’t see the art in it, she didn’t see the need to stir sixteen times counterclockwise and three times clockwise, or the reason to chop things so finely that she was sure her fingers were part of the potion. None of it made sense to her. At least when Snape was the professor, she had a chance, but Slughorn? No way. The man had no interest in her and her Potions skills were barely passable as it was; he didn’t look at her twice before deciding she wasn’t worth his time. She just wasn’t getting the help she needed - the help she found in Snape, because as much as he was awful and scary, he’d always put teaching ahead of vendetta, when it came to people like Katie. So this year it’d be harder to keep her grades up, something she needed to do in order to stay on the quidditch team.

Besides that, Katie had decided that she was going to start... well, being smart. Not so much that, but she was going to become everything that... well, everything that her parents wanted her to be. Even if they said she was good enough the way she was, Katie knew better; she knew that there was something missing from her relationship with her parents. They wanted a smart, girly daughter, not one who was only good at quidditch - someone well rounded, which she was definitely not. In fact, some thought Katie was entirely book-dumb, which wasn’t necessarily the case. She was terrible at Potions but really quite good at charms, and Defense wasn’t awful for her either. It was just Arithmancy and Potions she had trouble with. But the latter, she needed. It wasn’t that she wanted to be good at everything, it was wanting to be able to have a back up plan if she didn't get drafted, and it was accomplishing something - anything - off the pitch, something she'd never managed before, either socially or otherwise.

So despite her hatred for the library, Katie made her way inside, sitting at the table closest to the door - for easy escape, if necessary - and getting out her books. Even the books were heavy and old and frustrating, and Katie was sure the potion she was looking for wasn’t even listed in the index. She found it eventually, though, and settled in to start reading.

The only problem was that forty minutes later, Katie woke up abruptly to the chair across from her being pulled out, and she was drooling on the page of the text she was meant to be trying to understand. Well bloody hell. She sighed, sitting up proper again and trying to get focused. She could do this, she was sure of it. "Please tell me you’re a Potions whiz here to help me get my grade up," She joked to the newcomer, not even really registering who it was in her groggy, just woken up state.
