OVERALL HISTORY:
Finally, September came and Ginny was allowed to travel to Hogwarts on the train with her brothers. Though she had always wanted to come alongside her siblings, Ginny avoided their presence and sat by herself, where she was later joined by a few other first years who turned out to be Gryffindors as well. Per tradition, Ginny waved goodbye to her brothers as she crossed the water by use of the magic-propelled boats, lead by Hagrid. In the Great Hall, Ginny was, as was expected, sorted into Gryffindor, but left the stool to go and sit with her friends from the train, whom had been sorted before her. She had had very little nerves when it came to the sorting hat, for her brothers had told her the basics for personality regarding the four houses, and she was sure Gryffindor fit her best. Later that night, Ginny discovered Tom Riddle’s diary, and began writing in it, thinking her mother had gotten it for her. To her surprise, the diary wrote back to her—that was when she acknowledged she must have gotten the diary as a mistake. Despite this realization, she kept the diary and confided to Tom Riddle’s memory her frustration at having to come to school with second-hand products and robes and how she worried Harry would never like her. She opened her gentle heart to the diary and, in response, was manipulated. Tom Riddle used her vulnerable state to influence her actions, and by October, she showed signs of his invasion of her soul through pale, sickly symptoms. At the end of October, the memory of Tom Riddle was able to take full control of Ginny, forcing her to open the Chamber of Secrets, thereby releasing the basilisk. After this event, Ginny became more and more physically upset, to which her brothers, though trying to be helpful, thought were due to other reasons.
To the diary, Ginny confessed she worried for her sanity and began to think she was the attacker, for her memory was always blank during the nights students and staff were attacked. When Christmas vacation arrived, Ginny opted to stay at Hogwarts with her siblings instead of going to see her brother Bill in Egypt with her parents. She reflected that Hogwarts was not what she always had dreamt it would be. Sure, it was magical and exciting, but it was also horrifying and scary. The things that went on here terrified her, and at one point, she fooled herself into thinking it was normal. Eventually, Ginny became suspicious of the diary, and in response she threw it down a toilet in Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom. Once she was free of the diary, Ginny took it upon herself to send Harry an anonymous singing valentine on Valentine’s day. The dwarf that delivered the valentine ‘accidently’ ripped Harry’s bag, where Ginny, who was in Charms class with Harry at the time, discovered that he had Tom Riddle’s diary now. She was horrified to find it in his possession, believing it would tell Harry of her feelings for him, which she had confided in it the months previous, as well as reveal to him her possible blame for the attacks. So, she decided to wait until the boy’s dormitory was empty, at which time she ransacked Harry’s belongings to recover the diary. Once she had, Tom Riddle influenced her once more and had her open the Chamber of Secrets again. When Ginny later tried to tell Harry and Ron what had been going on, Percy interrupted her and Tom Riddle’s memory became furious. He forced Ginny to write a ‘farewell’ on the wall and then lead her into the Chamber of Secrets to die, knowing Harry would follow to save her.
Ginny awoke much later to find Harry had saved her. Crying and scared, Ginny told Harry the whole of what had happened and then, with the help of Fawkes, left the Chamber to be reunited with her parents in McGonagall’s office. She feared expulsion, but was instead sent to the hospital wing for recovery with the reassurance from Professor Dumbledore that ‘older and wiser wizards’ had been influenced by You-Know-Who. After this ordeal, Ginny returned to normal and finally got to experience Hogwarts without the traumatic experiences. At the end of the year, Ginny returned with her friends and family to the King’s Cross station and then returned home with her siblings. That summer, she traveled to Egypt with the rest of her family to visit her brother Bill, funded by her father’s success in the Daily Prophet Grand Prize Galleon Draw. In surprise and wonder, Ginny visited many tombs, but once again was shielded from the more gruesome displays by her mother. The night before the Weasleys set off for Hogwarts for another year, they stayed at the Leaky Cauldron where Ginny saw Harry once again. Though, due to her embarrassment over what happened last year at Hogwarts, Ginny was even shyer than usual and refused to even look at him. On the train, however, Ginny sought out the compartment where Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Professor Lupin sat due to the train stopping for he dementors. Because of Ginny’s exposure to Tom Riddle’s diary last year, Ginny was among the worst affected and had to be calmed and comforted by Hermione. Despite the train ride, Ginny’s second year at Hogwarts was normal and relatively uneventful, other than when Harry fell from his broomstick in Quidditch. Ginny was among the most devoted in visiting him in the hospital wing, even having made him a card that sang when it was opened.
That summer, Ginny became close with Hermione, who was staying at the Burrow before and after the Quidditch World Cup. Hermione shared Ginny’s room and tent, and their friendship blossomed due to their shared time. It was Hermione’s idea and advice that Ginny loosen up around Harry, since she could hardly speak let alone act naturally in his presence, and to also try seeing other people. Taking her advice to heart, Ginny spent more time with the golden trio and was able to show more of herself over time. She attended the Quidditch World Cup that summer, and was shaken by the appearance of Death Eaters after the Irish victory. After returning to Hogwarts, Ginny maintained a good relationship with Hermione, and became the only one Hermione confided in when Viktor Krum invited her to the Yull Ball. Since Ginny was too young to go to the ball without an older date, she had all but given up hope of going until Neville Longbottom asked her to go with him, since Hermione had turned him down because she’d already attained a date. Because Ginny was friends with Neville, she accepted, though she became frustrated when Harry later asked her to go with him because Cho Chang rejected him. At the Yull Ball, Ginny met Michael Corner and by the end of the year had started dating him.
That summer, with the revelation of the return of You-Know-Who, Ginny and her family were relocated to the Order of the Phoenix’s headquarters at 12 Grimmauld Place, where her parents became active members. Ginny spent the summer helping to clean the house to make it suitable as a headquarters while sharing a room with Hermione. During her time there, Ginny met Nymphadora Tonks and instantly took to her playful personality. When Harry arrived, Ginny was pleased to see him, but was relaxed in a way that she had never been before due to her taking Hermione’s advice and dating Michael. Finally, Ginny was completely herself, and she had to admit it felt much better than stressing over Harry every time she saw him, though she hadn’t really given up hope. When Sirius Black insisted that Harry be filled in about the Order of the Phoenix and Voldemort, Ginny, once again, was removed from the room by her mother as an act of protection. However, due to her friendship with Hermione, Ginny discovered what was said at the Order meetings anyway. On the train ride back to Hogwarts for Ginny’s fourth year, Ginny introduced Harry and Neville to Luna Lovegood, a Ravenclaw in her year. The meeting was odd at first, but Ginny was pleased to see Harry’s tolerance of Luna’s differences and to see their friendship grow. She cared for Luna and was sympathetic for her inability to make many friends. With the arrival of yet another Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, Professor Umbridge, the golden trio had decided to start a practical study group for defense spells. Ginny, bringing with her boyfriend Michael and several Ravenclaw students, joined the group and gave her input on the name of the group.
Ginny displayed her talents for defensive spells during her time in the DA, impressing Harry and making her brothers jealous. Later, when Fred, George, and Harry were banned by Professor Umbridge from Quidditch, Ginny tried out and became the new Gryffindor seeker, though she enjoyed playing chaser more. Though this was supposed to be a happy time for Ginny, it was ruined by the attack on her father by You-Know-Who’s pet snake just before Christmas. With her siblings and Harry, Ginny was sent to 12 Grimmauld Place to await news regarding her father’s condition, and was relieved to find out he was alright. During this time, Ginny noticed Harry’s withdraw from everyone at the headquarters, and with the help of Hermione, she discovered his suspicions of possession. In response, Ginny calmed his fears by relaying her own experiences, joking him for not coming to the one person who really had been possessed by You-Know-Who. After the Weasleys, Harry, and Hermione returned to Hogwarts after Christmas break, Ginny finally played her first Quidditch game for Gryffindor. Although she caught the snitch, they lost to Hufflepuff. Most likely as a result of Ginny being more confident and relaxed around him, her loyalty when standing up for him, and their shared experiences, Ginny grew loser to Harry. It was around this time that Ginny and Harry had their first, real conversation in the library, where Harry confided in Ginny that he needed to speak to Sirius. She encouraged him, and even went to Fred and George later asking them to help him find a way to reach his godfather. Later in the year, Ginny broke up with Michael Corner for his bad attitude towards the defeat of Ravenclaw’s Quidditch team due to Ginny catching the snitch.
When Harry had a vision of Sirius’ torture in the Department of Mysteries by You-Know-Who at the end of the year, Ginny and Luna helped the trio break into Professor Umbridge’s office but were soon caught and rounded up. She, Luna, and Neville, who had tried to help when Ginny was first captured, escaped the Inquisitorial Squad using the skills they’d gained by practicing with the DA. After the six had regrouped and despite Harry’s arguing, they set out for the Department of Mysteries to rescue Sirius. When Harry picked up a prophecy pertaining to him, the group was surrounded by Death Eaters and then Ginny was threatened in hopes of forcing Harry to hand over the prophecy. Instead, the group fought back, eventually resulting in a Death Eater breaking Ginny’s ankle. With Luna’s help, Ginny escaped and, after the battle, recovered in the hospital wing at Hogwarts. Following the death of Sirius, Ginny helped to comfort Harry’s grief, drawing them closer. It was during the train ride home that Ginny revealed that she was dating Dean Thomas, much to the horror of Ron. The summer before Ginny’s fifth year at Hogwarts was spent at the Burrow with the trio and her family. Despite having to put up with Fleur Delacour, her brother Bills fiancée, Ginny enjoyed her summer. She practiced Quidditch often and planned to try out for chaser in when her fifth year arrived. On the train back to Hogwarts, her reunion with Dean Thomas was cut short by Zacharias Smith, a Hufflepuff DA member who was attempting to find out what had happened last year at the Department of Mysteries. Annoyed and tired of his questions, Ginny hexed him and was caught by the new potions professor, Professor Slughorn. Fearing detention, she was instead rewarded with an invitation to the Slug Club.
As term started, Ginny made the Quidditch team as a chaser, just as she wanted, and was supremely satisfied. However, Ginny’s happiness was shattered in October when Hogsmeade was attacked, resulting in the death of several students and faculty of Hogwarts. Ginny, who had lost quite a few friends, found comfort and empathy from her circle of friends-- just in time for Ron’s disappearance. Instead of growing depressed as most would, Ginny grew angry and proactive. When they returned, she, in no way, accepted the flimsy excuse of going abroad, and is furious she hasn’t been told anything yet. And so, this is where we leave off, with Ginny wanting answers, harboring resentment for being left out.[/ul]
