When it comes to Remus, on the outside he looks like your average man. However, what people don’t know is that underneath he is hiding his own secret. Remus is a kind, friendly and warm person who always puts others before himself. Remus always was considered the mature one of the Marauders. Also he can be a little bit of a bookworm. Books and Remus go together well, he enjoys studying Defence Against The Dark Arts in particular. He will defend his friends, along with his happy to give advice and help others when they need it. Plus, he has a good temperament and is very patient. Remus is talented in charms, quite a good duellist, intelligent and caring. Remus can be a little shy; along with he won’t show if something is bothering him due to he doesn’t like to drag other people in to his problems. Remus will also keep things to himself, in the sense of he will brush off if someone has offended or upset him. Remus would instead apologise and show his forgiving side, he has a very forgiving nature. Remus is a selfless man, in the sense that he would put other people’s safety before his own.
A werewolf bit Remus when he was small; this in turn infected him with Lycanthrophy. Due to this, Remus finds it hard to make friends due to he fears they may find out about his deep dark secret. His lycanthrophy is something he dislikes and fears people will judge him for it. When it comes to the full moon and his monthly transformations, they are both uncomfortable and painful for Remus. However, despite this Remus doesn’t try to let his lycanthrophy get to him but sometimes it slips out in the form of his moods. His friends liked to refer to his condition as his “furry little problem” and also he has gained the nickname Moony as well. That is where he is thankful to have his friends; Remus was also part of a group known as the Marauders. Remus cared about them greatly; he was even known to let them get away with bullying. When it comes to bullying, Remus stays away from it and flat out refuses to participate. No, instead he is the type of man who would rather walk away from conflict, then stay and confront it. Some would say that in a way that would make him a bit of a coward. Back in his school days, Remus was in Gryffindor House and even became Prefect. But that didn’t stop Remus from feeling guilty when it came to not having much control over his friends. This was especially evident when he didn’t have the courage to tell Dumbledore about his friends being Animagi or when their bullying went too far. Snape in particular was a favourite target of his friends.
That is not always the case; Remus just has a little problem with controlling his own emotions sometimes. The only real time Remus will snap is the week before the full moon, where he is normally tired and not quite himself or if something has gotten to him and built up. However, at heart Remus has a good sense of humour and enjoys the occasional prank. Remus also likes to have other people accept him for who he is; due to he is always in fear that they will find out about his lycanthrophy.
Romance wise, Remus has always been a little unsure about it. Remus is more of the quiet type, who will observe a situation before he feels the need to interrupt in any form. One of Remus’s main loves is chocolate, he enjoys the sweet flavour and also like many other witches and wizards, Butterbeer. Remus also likes to follow the rules, however he is known occasionally to break them for a bit of fun. The more stubborn side of his personality shows occasionally, this is especially evident if he feels he is going to put his friends in danger. [/quote]

Remus’s father Lyall was an intelligent man, who was known to be shy. His intelligence got him far in life, in the end at the age of thirty Lyall had become a specialist authority in Non-Human Spirituous Apparitions. Even going as far as being world-renowned for his work with dealing with ghost like creatures, even Boggarts. Many of the creatures, even the Wizarding World didn’t know about. Oddly enough, speaking of Boggarts, Boggarts are how Lyall met his future wife Hope Howell. The unusual twist in the story is how the two met; due to Hope was in fact a Muggle. Hope was in fact an insurance worker who worked in Cardiff, whilst Lyall happened to be in Wales at the time too. He had received word that a particularly nasty Boggart inhabited the woods in that area. Meanwhile, poor Hope happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
An innocent walk in the forest caused her to bump in to the Boggart in question. The whole thing of course frightened her; after all it wasn’t every day that a Muggle saw a Boggart. The young woman, who was very imaginative in spirit; along with being a little sensitive, was soon convinced that someone or something was watching her. The end result was her Boggart turned in to a cruel, nasty looking man who outstretched his hands to her. Lyall had been elsewhere attempting to track down the creature, when a horrible scream met his ears. The young wizard naturally went running towards the source of the sound, where he and his future wife met for the first time. Hope still terrified watched as Lyall turned the creature in to a mushroom, whilst she looked to him confused.
“ It’s alright, it was just a Boggart.”
That was Lyall’s first words to her, his eyes looking over her. That was the day that the two fell in love and Lyall realised how beautiful she was. He took her home that day, an urge of wanting to protect her coming over him. Hope and Lyall got married a few years later; the ceremony was complete with a Boggart topped cake. Why? Because of how they met of course, seemed like the perfect idea at the time. After only a year of marriage the two had their first child, Remus John Lupin came in to the world on March 10th 1960. Young Remus showed many early signs of magic, giving his parents a good feeling he would follow his father in the future.
Being Bitten
The years passed and Remus had a reasonably normal up bringing. He lived with his parents in a small cottage up in the Glasgow area. By the time Remus reached the age of four, the Wizarding World was slowly becoming darker with each passing day. This was also around the time that Voldemort was slowly coming in to power, Death Eaters were being recruited along with all manner of dark creatures. Their aim was to try and attempt to throw over the Ministry of Magic. Upon the threat being recognised by the Ministry, they called out for various people who were specialists in Dark creatures. Lyall was called out due to his specialist area in Boggarts and other creatures of a ghostly nature. This was when he was offered a job in Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures; he of course took it instantly.
This was when Remus’s future attacker Fenrir Greyback came in to the Lupin’s life. Back in those days the Werewolf Registry wasn’t as controlled and so therefore had it’s own fair share of issues. Also, even back in these days Werewolves were seen as an issue in the Wizarding World and so shunned away to live in packs. Greyback was brought before the court as he was questioned about the death of two Muggle children. Naturally, due to how Werewolves were treated, they avoided being registered as much as possible. Fenrir decided to play the game and pretend to be innocent about the whole thing. How? He did this in the form of faking that he was nothing more than a Muggle Tramp and that he didn’t understand why he was in a room full of Wizards. Even going as far as acting like he was horrified of the news about the children. Fenrir had been dressed in nothing but filthy clothing at the time, along with his lack of wand convinced the court that he was telling the truth.
Lyall however wasn’t fooled by such a disguise and so decided to investigate in to it all himself. The young wizard had picked up signs in the form of Greyback’s behaviour and appearance, even going as far as to tell the committee that Fenrir should be locked away to the next full moon. The end result was he being laughed at by the committee, the full moon only being the next evening away. Lyall became angry with them, the comment about Boggarts only getting further under his skin. He lashed out about Werewolves, by calling them soulless and evil even to the point of saying they should die. Instantly Lyall was thrown out of the room, his temper still high as he did so. Greyback was released after a small apology, however when a Memory Charm was to be cast on him. Fenrir attacked along with two others who had been waiting at the entrance, all so he could forget he had even been in the Ministry walls.
That evening things changed for Greyback, who wished to seek revenge for the words, that Mr Lupin had spoken. However, when they learnt that Lyall had a son that was the target that Greyback decided to go for that evening. Hope had just tucked her five-year-old son in bed for the night, where Remus had instantly fell asleep peacefully. Meanwhile, outside Fenrir was waiting to launch his attack. When Hope left the room, the werewolf pressed his nose to the glass window with a low growl.
Upon looking in to the room, he saw Remus peacefully sleeping. An evil grin came to his lips, now was the time to attack. After forcing the window open, Fenrir entered the room and made his way over towards Remus. A scream filled the room as he attacked the terrified young wizard. The werewolf bit hard in to the boy’s shoulder, whilst Remus cried out for his parents. Lyall and Hope had been downstairs by the fire that evening, enjoying a peaceful cup of tea. When the scream reached their ears, Lyall threw down his cup instantly and ran out of the room. Panic struck him as he rushed up the stairs, tears nearly falling from his eyes as he came to Remus’s room.
”REMUS!”
Lyall had cried as he entered, upon seeing Greyback though he felt anger take over him. Blood covered the sheets, whilst Remus lay on the floor below unconscious. Hope soon followed just in time to see Lyall lose his temper, the normally cool Mr Lupin had finally lost his fuse. Fenrir was thrown from the house by a number of powerful curses, whilst Hope went crying towards their son. That was the night that Remus John Lupin became a Werewolf.
That was the night that started Lyall’s life long obsession to cure his son of Lycanthropy. He would spend day after day, looking for a cure for his son so that Remus could have a normal life again. Everyday his words rushing around in his mind, regret taking over him of what he had said in front of Greyback. No longer did he share those views as he once had, not now that his son had become one of them. Meanwhile, Remus grew up as normal as he could for a young boy. Lyall and Hope knew that Remus was dangerous, however they flat out refused to say it to their son’s face. Hope had explained it to Remus as best she could, when it came to his transformations his parents would lead him in to the forest for them.
The transformations were cruel, they showed Remus what real pain was, however as he grew Remus grew more and more use to these monthly changes. Hope in the end, gave up her day job at the local Muggle insurance company and instead taught her son at home in it’s place. This didn't bother Remus as such; the only real thing that bothered him was he had no friends. Lyall also decided to keep the information of his attacker away from Remus for many years, due to his fear of what might happen.
First Signs of Magic
Around the age of seven, Remus had awakened from sleeping all day after a particularly rough transformation the previous day. He had gone against his mother’s orders and decided to sneak downstairs to go keep his father company. Lyall had been off to help his son after his transformation and so was down in his study trying to do what he always did in his spare time. Remus might have only been young, however he sensed that something was wrong. Upon making his way downstairs as quietly as he could, clutching his favourite plush as he did. The young werewolf made his way along the downstairs corridor and towards his father’s study. Upon opening the door, he stepped inside with a smile on his lips only to be greeted with something he hadn’t been quite expecting.
Lyall Lupin fast asleep with his head down on the desk, various bottles and papers spread all over the desk. The sight saddened the young Lupin, however soon enough curiosity got the better of him. Moving forward he bravely moved to gently tap his father on the shoulder. Lyall though simply replied with a light grunt and Remus shook his head lightly. This wasn’t an unusual sight; it was just that this was the first time that Remus had come across his father in this particular situation. Looking away from his father, Remus got up on his tiptoes slightly and looked over at the desk. A clear confused expression came over his face, as he looked over all the bottles and papers confused. What has his dad been doing in here? That was when Remus realised that perhaps it was a bad idea to be in here.
Feeling his stomach sink a little, Remus looked back to his still sleeping father and back to the desk. A part of him wanted to walk away, whilst the other part of him only grew more curious. That was when he caught sight of something in the back of his father’s desk, a photo of him. Why was that there? Shrugging lightly to himself, Remus’s attention turned to a piece of parchment just under his father’s arm. Some of the writing was covered, but Remus could read a little. His mother had taught him how to read, even if it was basic at the time. The young boy saw his name and instantly confusion came over him, underneath was a bunch of other lines that he couldn’t quite see. But a sudden snort from his father was what made him step away from the desk.
Lyall Lupin awoke a few moments later, looking around blurrily and confused around the room. Upon catching sight of his son on the ground though, Remus looked away guilty. Father Lupin sighed deeply, before shaking his head and giving his son a stern look. His son being here surprised and a little bit irritated Lyall.
”Remus John Lupin. You know you aren’t suppose to be down here.”
Lyall snapped sharply to his son, who clutched his plush more tightly and looked away. Remus decided not to reply, but instead looked back up to his father’s desk.
”Daddy why are there bottles and things everywhere?”
The question of course caught Lyall off guard, who soon realised what had happened. How to get out of this one? He was about to reply to his son, when more footsteps filled the room, followed by someone panting.
Hope snapped to her husband, who blushed deeply and looked away from his wife. Lyall sighed again, before reaching up and running a hand over his face. Little did young Remus know, but in fact his father was searching for a cure for his condition. She clearly wasn’t impressed with her husband; her cheeks were filled with red and her eyes darkening.
”I’m sorry love he somehow managed to get in here. I must have left the office door open again.”
” But you know full well he isn’t allowed in here and that he should be resting!”
Remus shuffled away in to the corner now scared by his parents raised voices, his eyes flicking between them. Oh dear, now look at what he had started, a fight. The young werewolf could feel tears forming in his eyes as he watched the two, John clearly now frustrated by the whole thing. Remus screwed his eyes closed and clutched his plush, before finally something happened that no one had been expecting. The now shaking Remus felt something come over him suddenly, before letting out a soft cry to his parents and instantly the walls in the room began to shake. Tears streamed down Remus’s face as he dropped his plush and clenched his fists; a spare chair in the back of the room zoomed forward. Before thrusting itself to stand between the two fighting parents, who gasped in surprise. And that was the night that Remus showed his first sign of magic.
Childhood Years/ Hogwarts Letter
After Remus was bitten it changed the family’s life forever. They would move from village to village as they tried to hide their son’s condition from the world. News of Remus’s odd behaviour spread around fast and so that was there, a sign to leave each time. People started to realise that Remus’s disappearances were once a month, how pale he looked and various other signs. The problem got so bad, that due to the fear of Remus letting his condition slip. He wasn’t allowed to play with other children, which in the end caused Remus to become a lonely child. But it also meant he was close to his parents as a result. But with his new condition came another issue for Remus, this time in the form of his parents would cover up that their son was a werewolf.
This had been a simple thing when Remus was younger, however as he grew older it became difficult. His parents trick of once locking young Remus in a room and silencing spells was no longer having its desired effect. So, as he grew older, more powerful spells were put in place. This caused his parents to worry naturally, along with approaching ten years of age he could capable of destroying most doors and windows. Along with this at the time, their local community grew suspicious of the Lupin family.
Strange dark activity was building up at the time and so people grew wary. But not much was said to the Lupins, who adored their son despite his issue. The day that Remus turned eleven years old, an unexpected surprise turned up on Lyall and Hope’s door, coming in the form of Dumbledore. Remus’s parents tried to deny the man entrance due to fear, however not a short while later was he sat with Remus by the fire.
Albus explained to them how he knew about Remus, along with how Greyback had boasted about the whole ordeal with Remus. Plus, the fact that Dumbledore had his own spies amongst them. That was the night that it was arranged that Remus would be allowed in to Hogwarts, along with the arrangements of how to control his condition.Remus of course was excited for the news, due to he could come closer to people and perhaps even make some friends.
Hogwarts Years
Finally, the big day came and Remus knew that he was off to Hogwarts. A young and nervous Remus knew that this was the big day and that he had to leave behind his family for now. Lyall had still spent many night obsessing over his son’s Lycanthropy, which in a way worried Remus. However, at the same time Remus knew that his father was only trying to help. The young future Gryffindor boarded the Hogwarts Express before finding himself a compartment, then sitting down happily and as usual burying himself in a book. Remus had always been the type to bury himself in a book; it was his way of getting away from reality for a while. Remus was later that day sorted in to Gryffindor house, which led him to the first sighting of his future friends and group The Marauders. Remus received a letter from his mother daily checking how he was and explaining about his father. Remus kept mainly to himself the first day, however the next day was when he met his friends. Peter he had helped when he had bumped in to him in a corridor, then after that Sirius and James followed.
The young Gryffindor however hid his secret from them; he didn’t want his new friends to know about his condition. Remus went through the years giving excuses as to why he disappeared once a month. The main excuse being that his mother was sick and he had to visit her, or something similar. Finally, however one day Remus simply told them the truth and feared the worse. However, Remus was relieved to learn that they were okay with it all. The news brought joy to Remus, who was so relieved that the boys wouldn’t judge him for his condition. The news had come out during his second year, when he was approached about the subject. Remus being himself, had simply instead gone for telling the truth rather than lying any more about his Lycanthropy. The fifth year soon came and with it more good news, Remus found out that his friends had become Animagi. The news in turn helped Remus become tamer, due to they would accompany him when he went down to the Shack. Normally, before Remus would curl up in a corner of The Shrieking Shack and bit himself out of frustration.
His friends helped tame the beast so to speak. Also, during this time they formed a group named The Marauders. Remus gained the nickname Moony due to his Lycanthropy, whilst the nickname left many people baffled. They also invented the Marauders Map between the four of them, which they used to sneak around the school and pull the occasional prank. Yes, the Marauders enjoyed pulling the occasional prank, which in turn also put Remus in the occasional detention too. During their sixth year, there was an incident that involved Remus nearly making his one fear come true. Remus had nearly in his transformed state killed Severus Snape, a Slytherin that his friends were known to bully from time to time. When it came to Severus, Remus didn’t really have an issue with the boy. The incident had angered Remus, however he got over it in a week or so, which in turn as usual he forgave his friends. A small amount of guilt still haunts Remus over the fact that he has yet as Prefect to tell Dumbledore that his friends are Animagi. However, when it came to pranks, he was never the one to shout and tell off Sirius and James. No, instead he would simply let it slip.
Remus’s mother was always the type of witch to check on him, without fail Remus would receive an owl from her at least once a day. He became very worried about his father, who was still blaming himself for Remus being bitten. The man continued to obsess over curing his son’s Lycanthropy, which only worried Remus further. One time during his sixth year, Remus had returned home to find his father asleep at the kitchen table. Papers had been scattered over the table, books had been open everywhere and Lyall asleep snoring loudly on the table. No matter how much Remus told his father not worry, Lyall being his stubborn self continued to do it.
During his Hogwarts years was also where Remus picked up a few of his abilities. In his sixth year he successfully learnt how to do both wandless and wordless magic. Also, he passed his Apparition Test in his sixth year.
The Order of the Phoenix / First Wizarding War
This was around the time that he was approached by Dumbledore about his future career. Remus was offered the chance to join the group known as the Order of the Phoenix. He of course accepted this and along with it Sirius, James and Lily also joined to fight back against the Dark Lord. Upon leaving school however Remus struggled to find a suitable career due to his condition, but James offered to help him through hard times by supporting his good friend. The Order grew in members as the years passed, along with this was the time The First Wizarding War broke out over The Wizarding World. Remus fought back against the ever-growing Dark Lord, along with the rest of the Order.
This was also around the time that Remus discovered that Lily was pregnant with a child. However, little did they know that this child would change the future for them all. Dumbledore soon came to the conclusion that Harry was a prophecy and possible target for Voldemort. And so the Potters went in to hiding, to keep Harry safe. A Fidelius Charm was placed down and Sirius became the Potters Secret Keeper. Little did they know that Sirius would hand over that to Wormtail instead and the future of the Potters would soon be doomed. No one knew of the switch and later that evening Lily and James died under the threat of Lord Voldemort. The news came as a great blow to Remus, who found out only a few hours later that his friends had passed away. That was the night that he also turned his back on Sirius and lost his trust for the man. This was also when Remus came to suspect that Sirius might be a spy for Voldemort.
During this time his mother Hope passed away, which only added another blow to Remus’s emotions. His father Lyall remained alive but Remus refused to live with him and so told the man to live by himself. Over the next few years, Remus picked up various jobs, even some below his level just so he could get some money together. Then leave each time it was picked up on his monthly pattern of being sick.
Teaching at Hogwarts
Sirius was sent to Azkaban after the news that Peter Pettigrew had been killed reached Remus’s ears. The only evidence they found was one finger, the news once again shocked Remus though. But with the bad news, came along a new opportunity for Remus. This came in the form of a teaching position offered to him by Dumbledore at Hogwarts. The werewolf reluctantly took the position and boarded the Hogwarts Express the next day after packing up his things, in his once home in a small cottage in Yorkshire. When Dementors attacked the train however that wasn’t something Remus had been expecting. This was around the time that he was introduced to Harry himself. He looked like a double of his father, which came as a small surprise to Remus. The year went by as usual at Hogwarts though. Lupin would go away for his usual transformations. The werewolf even had the time to teach Harry The Patronus Charm, along with finding out some more rather shocking news. Remus managed to get the position as the school’s Defence Against The Dark Arts Professor. None of the students at the time knew he was a werewolf, but the staff knew of his condition.
When he was teaching he did however teach his classes a lot about The Dark Arts. Remus in particular taught them about the many Dark creatures involved in this particular area. This was also where he introduced the class to Boggarts. The Boggart turned in to Remus’s real fear, that being a full moon. Luckily for Remus Snape gave him Wolfsbane potion while he taught at the school. This was also the year when Remus learnt the truth of how Sirius hadn’t betrayed the Potters, but instead that Peter had. After this event, he decided to resign from his teacher position due to parents finding out about his Lycanthropy; this was also when he handed the Marauders map over to Harry.
Second Wizarding War
He moved later on to the current Order of The Phoenix, he also became a member of the Advance Guard too. Remus lived at Sirius’s house for a while, but was rarely seen due to he was always out on missions set by the Order. The death of Remus’s old childhood friend Sirius Black brought a great shock to Remus. The man had died during their battle at the Department of Mysteries, which took place in 1996. He watched as his friend Sirius fell through a veil and to his death after Bellatrix Lestrange cast a curse causing the man to fall in to the veil. Remus even had to prevent Harry from diving in after the man, something Remus would never forget
This was also the year in which he found himself falling for his wife Tonks, who of which Remus refused to believe that he had feelings for and so pushed her away. He however still refuses to be in a relationship with her due he feels that he is too poor, too old and too dangerous for her. Now he currently lives in a rented room at The Leaky Cauldron, where he is attempting to pull all his emotions together slowly but surely.
