Personality
LIKES:
Flying – One part of Quidditch is the flying itself, and even when he’s not inside a game or training, he often can be found soaring.
Winning – Oh yes, of course he likes winning, particularly if he kept his score very clean himself as keeper. But as he also likes:
Fairness – he would never be able to live with a shabbily won victory
Hogwarts – he always dreamt of coming back here one day, at least to visit, it has become his home more than his birthplace
Honeydukes – Pssst, Oliver’s got a sweet tooth, and would spend his month’s salary on Charmed Choc Crisps if he could!
Wearing a kilt at home – another big PSST! His family belongs to the MacKenzie clan… but he never told that for fear of being laughed at, and getting asked the ‘obvious’ questions
Harry Potter – that guy won him the Quidditch Cup and is the best seeker he’s ever knon, what’s not to like![/ul]
DISLIKES:
Death Eaters – Goodness, he can’t understand their obsession – and they nearly spoilt the mood of the Quidditch World Cup!!!
Foul Play – Oliver’s a sportsman through and through, he doesn’t believe in cheating
Being still judged for who he was – Oliver has changed, and he wants people to believe that!
The whole Harry Potter/Voldemort thing – you all know how often that interfered with Quidditch![/ul]

OVERALL PERSONALITY: To say one thing, Oliver Wood is obsessed with Quidditch. For him that comes before everything, health, food, death, and in his years at Hogwarts he was known to never spare his team, driven by the fervent wish of winning the Quidditch Cup once from Slytherin, and he would do anything for achieving this goal. Then again, he is the captain of the team but always sees the team effort before his own achievements. Often enough he kept the score for Gryffindor clean while Harry and the others won points, but he never mentioned that.
However obsessed he may be with winning, he is also an extremely fair player who would never capitalize on a shady opportunity to win a game (like f.e when Harry fell off his broom in book three, he refused to let the game be repeated and claimed the Hufflepuff victory valid)
When he finally achieved his goal though, Oliver was not only overjoyed, he also calmed down a little. Getting into professional Quidditch playing showed him how serious this game can be and how little your own ambitions can count. Oliver actually found he was not someone to endure the constant stress and competition forever, and it cured him of his obsession to win. What he would like better, he realized, would be to care for the future of Quidditch, showing the next generation how fun it can be, therefore he is now applying to be Madame Hooch’s assistant, maybe one day taking over from her and becoming Flying Teacher.
So what we see today, after a few years have passed, is a very much calmer, mature Oliver Wood, who still is enthusiastic about Quidditch and flying, but doesn’t put it about anything else anymore. He even accepted being expelled from his current Quidditch team as he left them before a very important game. Now with nothing to go back to and not even so sorry about it, he will learn to live this new life to the best of his abilities.[/quote]

OVERALL HISTORY:
Born on December 8th in 1976 to the freshly married couple Fergus and Maggie Wood, Oliver had what is commonly considered a happy childhood. His parents might not have been overly spoiling him, but being the second son and more down-to-earth than his capricious brother Robert, he never had to want for anything either. Being born into a mainly wizarding family, Oliver had little to none contact to the Muggleworld, as they were living on a farm a few miles outside the small town Kirkintilloch.
He led a simple enough life which made him ignorant to high ambitions except one: from an early age he had shown his love for flying and Quidditch and he followed the Scottish League with vigor and fascination, rooting for Pride of Portwee and dreaming of being one of their team one day.
Ever since Robert got accepted to Hogwarts and came home in the holidays, boasting about his abilities in front of his little brother, Oliver developed a slight envy and a need to be better. Maybe that’s what sowed the seeds for his obsession with the Quidditch House-Cup later, as he wanted to prove that he could do something his brother could not: winning it back from Slytherin after years of domination.
When Oliver got his Hogwarts letter as well and got sorted into Gryffindor – unlike his brother who was a Ravenclaw – he actually couldn’t wait to get into the Gryffindor team, but had to wait for a year first, as only second years were allowed to play.
However, his patience got rewarded soon enough, and Oliver took up the position of keeper and rose in importance until he took over the team as captain. Now, finally, his grand dream was within his grasp. Winning over Slytherin however proved more difficult than he had thought, and the frustration turned him into a little martinet. What he demanded from others, he also provided himself, going to real extremes and never allowing sloppiness with him or with any members of his team.
Especially the Weasley Twins often joked that this one Bludger he had taken to the head in his first match must have damaged his brain a bit, as no one could possibly put Quidditch over everything, even health and sanity.
With Harry Potter entering his team, Oliver’s dream seemed to come true. Finally he had the seeker he’s been waiting for, someone who could win a match all by himself, should even the other team members lack a bit. Then again, luck was not on his side yet, as several misfortunes always prevent them from winning the final game. In his first year, Harry Potter was in Hospital Wing recovering from his confrontation with Voldemort, in his second year the matches were cancelled because of the Basilisk’s attacks.
When the chamber was finally closed again and things resumed to normal, Oliver’s first reaction was a gleeful shout: “Quidditch matches are back on!”
Coming into his final year, Oliver was running out of time. This was his last chance to win the cup and so his obsession became even more serious, annoying his team to no end, almost causing a mutiny. He got snappy with them and developed a very short temper in general. But when the first match against Hufflepuff was lost when Harry fell from his broom due to a Dementor attack, he declined a rematch, staying fair despite his desire to win. He never let Harry live it down however, unnerving him with advices before the last match on how he couldn’t catch the Snitch until Gryffindor wasn’t ahead at least sixty points. All went well though, and finally, finally Oliver could lift the Quidditch Cup into the sky, feeling as grand as he possibly could.
The next year brought the Quidditch World Championship and of course Oliver was there, rooting for Ireland as neither Scotland nor England had made it to the finale. Excited, he introduced Harry to his parents and told him he had been taken on by the club Puddlemore United. That proved to be only a steppingstone, for once again Olivers ambitions were far greater. Due to a great amount of luck but also skill, one year later he got accepted into the team of his early boyhood dreams: The Pride of Portwee, first only for the reserve team, but due to his hard work and ambition he often was allowed to guard the goals when the main keeper of Portwee was indisposd – which happened to be a lot due to his lifestyle.
The hardship of being a professional player however did not only bring joy for Oliver. He was not used anymore to start from scratch, being a nobody that could convince by effort only. He was willing to try, but he soon found that he might not want to do this for the rest of his life.
What made him reconsider and quite rearrange his priorities in life was a most peculiar incident. Shortly after school, when he was still playing for Puddlemere United a training accident made his wand break, and he had to go to Ollivander’s for a new one. This time a Black Walnut wand chose him, like Mr. Ollivander said a good wand for someone who knew his place in life and stayed true to himself. Back then Oliver had still thought he knew exactly where he wanted to be. However, slowly but surely, he wasn’t so satisfied with his wand anymore, it got quirky and refused to perform the easiest of spells accurately. When he sought out the Wand Maker he didn’t expect to hear one thing: That he might watch out and listen to his inner voice… because he might be deceiving himself with something. So Oliver listened, and put a few things together, realizing that the stress was eating away all the fun he had in Quidditch, and that he might not be so sure anymore, if that was what he really wanted.
After a long night of thinking and slowly losing the firm ground under his feet, Oliver knew he had to make a clear cut. Instead of going to a game the following morning, he wrote two letters: One addressed to Hogwarts, one addressed to his club Pride of Portwee. The Hogwarts letter was gladly answered pretty fast, and Oliver saw a new future for him dawning on the horizon: he would return to Hogwarts, as an assistent for the flying teacher Madame Hooch who was clearly past her strongest years. This, he realized, could be his place in life, he wanted to care for the next generation of possible Quidditch players and teach them what had once been for him the most important thing in life, showing them the joy flying could hold, but also showing them that it should never become the only purpose in life you had.
Oliver Wood had grown up, but he knew it might take a while to convince some people he has changed for the better.
When he wanted to pay a visit to Mr. Ollivander a good week later, to thank him for his insightful advice, he however was shocked to find the Wand Maker missing, his shop abandoned. It seemed like this advice might have been the last for Mr. Ollivander to give, but Oliver hopes with all his might that one day he will see the Wand Maker again, so he can properly thank him.
