White. The white had bleached away all sense of time and color. The days rolled on with hardly a change in light to tell the difference. Luna found this fascinating. It was like stopping in time to give those less observant time to see the world, or what was left of it. Luckily, Luna was always observant. Nature was beautiful, and she felt it an offense to ignore it, lost in her daily activities. Trees stood bravely, stripped of their leaves, during these white times. Animals hid to sleep until the warmth returned to Scotland, tucking their bodies away from the bleaching sensation of snow. The whole grounds sparkled and shone, as if newly cleaned and scrubbed to perfection. It was dazzling and dream-like. And yet, life here went on. Students continued to learn, events of impact continued to occur, and Quidditch continued on the pitch. Luna knew this quite well, but often chose to join the earth, slowing down her movements until she finally stopped spinning too.
Slowly, Luna opened her eyes. The light gray skies rushed to meet her gaze, making her feel very small. Cold snow seeped past her clothes, cooling her back until she felt the freezing temperatures nip at her skin. Clenching her fists at her side, Luna smiled as they crunched snow, packing it to form to her fingers. So beautiful. Any day of the week, Luna would have chosen to come and lay in the snow, risking illness to simply feel in tune with the earth; however, today Luna was waiting. Closing her eyes again, Luna spread her arms out to create the wings of an angel in the snow. Her dirty blonde hair hid itself in her hood, but it wasn't hard to figure out who she was from a distance. Not many students would be insightful enough to come and lay in the snow for hours, or wait in it. Breathing deeply, Luna smiled beautifully and opened her eyes once more. Ginny. Her friend's name swirled around her head like a wrackspurt, numbing it.
Luna wasn't nearly as absent as students seemed to think. There were times when Luna could be quite lucid, and she was very capable of being sensitive to other's feelings. Ginny was possibly Luna's best friend, making it difficult to simply ignore the girl and her regular rhythms. Ginny was a self-confident, admirable person -- qualities that Luna found interesting in the witch. However, starting about half-way through January, Luna had noticed Ginny's subtle attempts to cover her back, to keep others from touching it, and her occasional twitching from pain. Looking back, Luna could now match these strange actions with February, for they were occurring again in slow progression. It was a known fact that Ginny had received scars in the second Battle of Hogsmeade in December, but nothing had been said as to affects of the scars. With that information and the fact that Ginny's odd behavior occurred progressively up until the middle of the month, Luna immediately tied in the full moon and was concerned for Ginny's mental well-being.
That was why Luna was here, trying her best to seem her normal dreamy self while lying in wait for Ginny from the Quidditch pitch. The stone path leading from the gates of the castle up to Hogwarts lay near her, but it was nearly obliterated by the layers of snow. Lifting her hands up to absently finger her cork necklace, Luna began to hum a little tune, her eyes fixating on the endless gray above her. As a friend, she was very worried for Ginny. Being scarred during an attack, and having lingering affects couldn't be easy on the mind. It was Luna's intention to draw this information from Ginny's lips and to be there to comfort that witch if she proved upset by it. For, were it the other way around, Luna would want the same sort of reassurance from Ginny too.
