Personality
LIKES:
Astronomy: Studying the stars and planets in the night sky always makes her happy, though the reason eludes her. She has at least two dozen books on the subject, and her library on it is increasing every summer. She's always asking her father if he minds buying her a new book or two. She wouldn't have anything to read over the summer otherwise! She always finishes her student textbooks early, and never has anything else to do. Astronomy was something she took up after her First Year at Hogwarts was completed, and she's never given it up since. She someday hopes to do something in the field, though she hears it might be quite difficult to start out in. Her father tries to encourage her by saying she could be a muggle astronomer, but she finds that foolish and silly to say at all.
Cats: She loves the sleek and intelligent felines, but finds that she is quite allergic to them. It cuts her up that she can't own one, and her father won't even put her on any sort of medicine or potions to suppress the reaction. He says that it wouldn't do to become addicted to such things. He keeps offering to buy her a dog, but she refuses. She doesn't want a mutt, she wants a cat! She has learned to live with this however, and instead likes to put up calendars filled with cats on her wall at home. She tries not to let others know of her somewhat strange obsession though. She fears they would think her odd for it.
History of Magic: It is always a good idea to know as much as you can about history, or you are doomed to repeat it. It is a saying she picked up in a book once, and she still sticks to it. She enjoys the subject, though many other students bemoan having to take it. Perhaps someday-- if her love of Astronomy doesn't pan out into a job-- she will become a teacher for the subject. She does find it so fascinating, though it could be implemented better sometimes. Some teachers only do it as a last resort and therefore have no love for it. If a Professor were to come along who actually cared for it, perhaps students would enjoy that classwork more? An engaging class is better than a listless, boring one.
Logic: As a student of Ravenclaw, it's a given that she would enjoy this. She doesn't like to let emotions guide her-- though she is human and it's bound to happen sometimes-- and therefore prefers to think with her brain. If you think logically instead of with your heart, then you are bound to make far less mistakes. Madeline has found this to be correct, and attempts to let logic guide her course. It's also a challenge to think coolly and analytically when your emotions are screaming something entirely different at you as well; she does enjoy challenges.[/ul]
DISLIKES:
Alarm Clocks: Her father bought her one for their house, and she loathes the thing. She enjoys going to sleep at the same time every and waking up naturally, but sometimes her parental unit insists that she use it. He's always worried she'll be late to meeting with her family members on his side. She does actually attempt to be social with them during the summers.
Computers: How do they work? Her father bought her one last summer, because he thinks she needs to be more in-touch with her muggle half, and she doesn't get them at all. She's attempted to do things on it, but it always just befuddles her. She ends up giving up before she can even figure out what's going on with it. Her father offers to ask someone who knows how to teach her, but she always declines. She doesn't much care for it anyway, so why bother to learn?
Chocolate: She prefers the taste of vanilla. Even though she's stated time and time again she doesn't like chocolate, her father still buys her a red velvet cake for her birthday celebration every year. (Which they have to hold in the summer, since she's at school during her birthday.)
Muggle Studies: It was suggested she take this class once. She disliked it intensely; she has no interest in anything pertaining to muggles or their culture. Quite honestly, she resents them because of her mother's abandonment when she was younger. Every time her father tries to get her to do something from the muggle world, she always attempts to turn him down flat. She doesn't want to get in "tune" with that side of her "heritage." She'd much rather pretend she didn't come from a Muggle at all.
[/ul]
STRENGNTHS:
Polite: She prides herself on being able to stay polite no matter what the situation. She's not rude to those who aren't rude to her first. She doesn't allow gossip to ruin her view of people, and instead if she meets them she'll let them be the person to set her views. She'll be polite to anyone until it's proven they're not worth it.
Determined: Once she puts her mind to something, you can bet that Madeline will attempt everything within her power to see it done. If she gives her word, then she truly means it and she will stop at nothing to keep up her end of the bargain. She prides herself on never failing someone when she's promised something. This determination comes from the fact that her mother failed at her own vows: to love and cherish, no matter what happens, till death do they part. She still loathes her mother greatly because she was so weak willed to let something like a little magic get in between her love for her family.[/ul]
WEAKNESS:
Coward: She doesn't stand up for what she believes in. It's much easier for her to go along in a crowd than to stand against it. She just hasn't ever found something that makes her passionate enough to stand up for what's right. She'll do what needs to be done, but only if it's the easy way out.
Father: People could easily use the love she holds for her father against her. He's the only family she really has now, and she loves him dearly. She'd do anything for him and to keep him safe. She just wants him to be happy, and she knows that when her mother left it tore him up inside. He still hasn't remarried all these years later, and she never hears of him dating anyone. She just wishes she could help him in some way.[/ul]
GOALS:
Get 'Es' In All Of Her N.E.W.T.s For right now, this is a short term goal. She's working hard to make sure all of her grades are just perfect. She's taking as many classes as she was possibly allowed to take, and she devotes almost all of her free time to school work. That means she doesn't have much time for boys, but she doesn't seem to mind all that much honestly. Most guys she knows are just plain ridiculous and not worth her time.[/ul]
BOGGART:
PATRONUS:
ERISED:
OVERALL PERSONALITY: Madeline on the surface is a polite, cordial girl who was raised to mind her manners and keep her thoughts to herself if they're upsetting. Her father doted on her growing up, mostly to try and make up for the fact that her mother abandoned her. Madeline is stubborn, and tends to always want to get her way. She hates it when people try to change her mind when it's already set. She has her ideals and for the most part those can't be compromised; however, there are certain things that will sway her from her mindset. If there's something she really wants done, she'll stop at almost nothing to get it. She is still a bit insecure of herself because she's still frightened by the memory of her mother abandoning her.[/quote]
History
BIRTHPLACE:
RESIDENCE:
PARENTS:
Rose Lewis nee Brown: 34 years old, Mother, Unknown. Rose is Madeline's mother, the muggle woman who left her daughter and husband because of the magical abilities she found out about. She had originally wanted to take Madeline with her, but because of the high chances of Maddy also being magical, she chose to leave her behind. She has not attempted one time to get in contact with Madeline since, and Mads doesn't know what ever happened to her. Her side of the family is very quiet, and Madeline isn't one hundred percent certain of their names, nor their locations so there is no way to contact them directly.[/ul]
SIBLINGS:
IMPORTANT RELATIVES:
Gabriel Lewis: 64 years old, Grandfather. Gabriel is very sick, and has to stay at his home. He cannot leave the house, and that's the main reason that Madeline hasn't seen her grandparents in a long while. Madeline isn't sure what he's sick with, because both of her grandparents are very silent on the matter and don't want to worry her. He's now a retired college professor, and he's also a muggle.[/ul]

OVERALL HISTORY:
prebirth: Madeline's story starts as all little girls' and boys' stories do: with her parents and how they met. Her mother worked as a librarian for a muggle college, and her father worked for the Ministry of Magic. He was a half-blood on his father's side, and his father just to happened to be a professor at that university. When Clint went to visit his father one day, he stumbled into the pretty Rose Brown and they hit it off almost straight away: quite literally. They ran into each other and they both fell backwards, books and papers flying every which way. Of course Clint was a gentleman and rushed to Rose's aid, assisting her to her feet and gathering her belongings for her.
Rose thanked him, and somehow they fell into conversation. They were both headed in the same direction-- the library was in the same building as Clint's father's classroom-- so they spoke the entire way there. It turned out that both were passionate about much the same things, and they began speaking of these things almost straight away. She was wearing a necklace with a band insignia on it that Clint just happened to love, so he had brought it up in conversation. One thing led to another, and before Clint knew it he was asking Rose on a date. Surprisingly enough, she was single and accepted!
The two quickly started dating a few weeks (and a couple dates) after that. Clint was head over heels for her, and Rose seemed to feel much the same. He came on his days off to sit with her in the library and chat her up, getting to know her better and strengthening their bond. Clint was promoted at work and-- though he hadn't told her exactly what he did, he had told her he worked for the government. They went out to celebrate that night that he received such an esteemed position and that was when he told her he loved her. They had been dating for several months and this point, and Rose was delighted, admitting she felt the same.
It was a year later when Clint got down on one knee and proposed. In all this time he never once thought to mention to her that he was a wizard. It just never felt like the right time, and he wasn't sure how to bring it up in conversation. Though his family urged him to at least say something, Clint never did. It was an act he would come to regret for the rest of his life. Six months after they became engaged, they married, in a quiet little chapel. They moved back to his hometown of Brodick on the Isle of Arran, and Clint lied and said he had transferred. In actual reality, he was just aparating to his job every morning out of her line of sight, but she didn't think anything of it.
After being married for almost two years, practically on their anniversary, they found out that Rose was pregnant. She was overjoyed; for the last year alone they had been attempting to conceive and now here was their little bundle of joy. A twinge of discomfort and guilt filled Clint when he realized he was going to eventually have to reveal his long hidden secret: he was a wizard. There was a high chance his offspring would inherit the magical abilities, and he didn't want his wife to freak out when they started showing those abilities. He still put it off however. He told himself he had plenty of time to figure out a way to explain things and that everything would be fine.
The pregnancy went just fine. Madeline Mae Lewis was born on April 17th, in the wee morning hours when it was raining. Clint was overjoyed to see that she had the coloring of her mother; dark haired and fair skinned, with the same shape mouth and her eyes were the same color as well. Of course there was Clint there, but you wouldn't really see it until she got older. The same smile, the same sparkle in her eyes when she laughed. No, in apperance alone she resembled her mother most of all. Rose was happy that the babe was healthy, though she was a bit worried because Madeline was on the quiet side. She rarely fussed, and when she did her screams were never loud. They were more whimpers than anything.
But all worries aside, the family was happy together and close knit. Rose was simply pleased that she was finally a stay at home mom; she had quit the little shop job she had for the last two years so she could stay at home and care for Madeline. Clint was happy that his wife was happy, and that his child didn't have any horrible diseases. This calm (practically a calm before the storm sort of thing) would last for another six years before things started to fall apart.
early years: Madeline did not start showing magical tendencies until she was six years old. Clint had started showing them at three, so when Madeline's third birthday came and went, he was torn between relief and angst. On one hand, that meant if she was a muggle like her mother he would never have to admit to his own magical abilities. On the other, he had been hoping to pass it down to his child so that he could help her grow up in a wizarding household. This meant that there was so much he could never share or show his own child. He wasn't sure if he wanted her to be magical or muggle more at this point.
When Madeline turned six, however, was when things started to get strange. Of course Rose found it eerie and unsettling, but Clint knew what he was seeing. The objects randomly floating in the air, Madeline's hair turning a bright orange, and her singing off her eyebrows were all normal, magical showing things. It was clear that Madeline was going to be a witch. Clint was proud, but also a bit nervous. This meant that his day of reckoning had come.
When Maddy turned seven, it could be ignored no longer. Now she was starting to do even more crazy things with her magical talent and that meant that Rose was getting freaked out. She had started talking about calling an exorcise and maybe getting Madeline out of the house. What if it was haunted? She had asked one night. Clint knew that he couldn't make his wife go through with this any longer. She was starting to try to pull her own hair out of frustration and anxiety. He sat her down in the kitchen and explained everything. "I'm a wizard," he had told her. "Here is my wand, and I went to a place called Hogwarts." He told her every little detail he could think of and then he showed her a few spells.
Rose sat there, silent and without saying a word. Her eyes were slightly wide in her pale face, but otherwise she didn't freak out or scream. She watched him as he explained everything to her and then she peered at the spells as he cast them about and made crazy things happen. When he was done they both were seated in silence, peering at each other but Rose not really seeing anything. She slowly got up from the table and asked to be excused to gather her thoughts. Clint allowed this; he was actually rather hopeful that she was taking everything well and they could get on with their lives, a happy family of three who loved and respected each other.
Rose, however, was not happy. He had lied to her for all these years. She had thought him a rather average, normal bloke. She had married a man she thought was trustworthy and decent, but it turned out he was a liar and had decieved her. He had never once tried to tell her about his abilities or his magic, his own world. He was working somewhere she didn't know of and had been the entire time they were together. He had lied and said he was working for the government, but he wasn't working for her government, oh no. He was working for his freaky government. She began to pack her bags and tuck away her belongings, intent on leaving this house and never looking back.
Clint had kissed his daughter on the head and gone outside to think for himself. He was still feeling hopeful, but the longer Rose stayed quiet in their room, the more anxious he became. She wasn't attempting to come out and make peace with him, nor talk things through. She was remaining pretty tight lipped on the matter. He had seen her go to the bathroom once and, though he had tried to talk to her, she had avoided eye contact and hadn't said anything. Now, two hours after she had locked herself away, he heard the bedroom door open. He waited for another fifteen minutes before he got up and walked back into the cottage to find her packing up Madeline's belongings as well.
"What are you doing?" He asked her and he reached out to grab her wrist to pull her to a halt, but his hand fell away when she flinched. There was real fear in her eyes now as she looked at him, and he couldn't even see any love remaining. She thought he was a stranger now, all because he was a wizard. All because he had never told her this part about himself, this very important part. She explained she intended to pack up Madeline's things and leave. He told her that she couldn't and she actually looked rather devastated. He explained that the child was already showing signs of magic within herself, and that soon she would start asking questions, wanting to know what was going on. Rose would never have those kinds of answers. Then Madeline would go to a magical school and learn how to harness her powers. Did Rose want to deal with that? She didn't even want to deal with that from the man she loved, would she be able to raise Madeline fairly and with love?
No, Rose finally admitted. She would not be able to raise a baby girl who was magical. She would not be able to love her without thinking she was a monster. She set down all of Madeline's belongings, picked up her own, and then began to walk out of the room. Madeline started crying; she was a very quiet child, but when she realized something amiss was going on she tossed back her head and began to wail. Clint tried to calm the child down, but she wasn't listening. She called for her mother, over and over again, but Rose didn't look back. Madeline had to watch as Rose walked out that door and was never seen again.
Clint tried to explain over the next few years that no, it wasn't Madeline's fault. No, she wasn't to blame for her mother never contacting them again. Eventually Clint and Rose were able to get a divorce without having to see each other, and Clint tried his hardest to shut that chapter of his life. This time he was more intent on taking care of his only daughter and raising her the way she deserved to be raised: with love and happiness. His mother volunteered to watch her until she got old enough to go to muggle school full time. He was intent on making her go to school until she was to go away for her magical training. When she turned eleven, she received the letter from Hogwarts. Madeline had to admit, even to herself, that she was excited to go. She was curious what would happen and about meeting other kids just like her.
Her father explained to her what each house meant: Slytherin was for their cunning, Hufflepuff for their loyalty, Gryffindor for their bravery, and Ravenclaw for their wit. It was clear which one Madeline wanted from the very beginning: Ravenclaw. She had a thirst for knowledge like no other. She wanted to know everything she possibly could learn in whatever time she had on this earth. She read any book her father gave her, and when he started giving her puzzles she poured herself over them for hours on end. She was proud of herself and overjoyed-- in her own way-- when she went to Hogwarts and was sorted into the house of her choice. Ravenclaw was everything she had ever wanted and more. She met others like herself and grew to understand who she was as a person. She was intelligent and she had the determination to go after that knowledge with everything within her.
Of course, there are those who stray from their paths.
In her Sixth Year, Madeline saw something that maybe she shouldn't have. Blaise was pouring something into the muggleborns drinks, something that he probably shouldn't even have. Intent on finding out the truth, Madeline cornered him one day and badgered him until he told her. Well, he told her part of the truth, not the whole truth. She wouldn't know that what he was pouring was werewolf's blood to taint them, she had no way of knowing what she offered to help was a sinister plot that could possibly get other students killed. No, she thought it was going to be a simple prank that would make her feel a little happier on the inside. All of these muggleborns had such a happy family, muggles who accepted their magical abilities. Why couldn't Madeline have had that? Why couldn't her mother have loved her regardless?
No, she had no way of knowing what she was assisting with was so downright diabolical. But she still offered up her assistance regardless, even without knowing the whole story. It was one of the few times being a Ravenclaw didn't help Madeline Mae Lewis.
