This would not do. Through her exchange of letters with various sources of information (including, of course, her cousin Lucas), Rayna had discovered the existence of a werewolf at Hogwarts. While her entire life she had known the school to be rather lax in its standards and education as compared to Durmstrang, she hadn’t realized how far, exactly, the corruption went. For a headmaster to knowingly and willingly house one of those unnatural creatures, not to mention give him employment and free reign of the school to infect students, absolutely disgusted her. It struck her as an abuse of power and a breach in trust between the man and the parents who sent their children to be (poorly) educated at his school. If she ever found herself in need of educating the children unfortunate enough to be born to her, she would definitely be sending them to Durmstrang. Lucas had been very explicit in his warnings that Remus Lupin was not to be harmed until further notice and Rayna had begrudgingly agreed to the terms from the only person who still sometimes fondly referred to her as Sabine. His terms, however, did not restrict her from stalking the werewolf and scaring him half out of his skin with threats. The threats would come later. The key to being a step above your victim was to observe them in their natural habitat where they displayed flaws and weaknesses, which was what Rayne intended to do as she stepped through the great doors and into Hogwarts. She wondered, as she walked, how long Remus Lupin had been a werewolf. With a name like his, maybe he came from an entire family of them. That was a horrifying thought, werewolves who bred and then turned their young. Her musings were mostly because of the roots of his first and last name. Remus was one of the twin founders of Rome who, legend had it, had been suckled by a wolf along with his brother. Then, of course, lupin was a purple flower named for the Latin word lupinus, which roughly translated to belonging to the wolf. Could anyone be less of a suspicious person? In her younger years, she might have killed him on the spot after finding out his name and, as research told her, her instincts would have been right. Her pattern of thoughts had kept her occupied while climbing the staircases up to the library, which was where Lupin worked as the librarian. She should have been there visiting Lucas, but this seemed like the sort of thing she should get done before announcing her presence to him. Pushing the door to the library open, she stepped in boldly and looked around, her right hand tightened around the silver knife at her hip. The only male who seemed to be the right age looked rather tired, old, and resigned, if she were reading anything correctly. While werewolves shouldn’t be underestimated no matter what, this one looked like he might just roll over and let her shove her blade through his heart. Rayna pulled her knife out of its leather sheath and stabbed the point into the nearest table with a loud thunk. She let her hand rest on it so the silver rings on her fingers were highly visible to the man. “Not much of a fight left in you, is there?” She remarked. |
