“Lumos.”
Doreen’s wand flared at the tip, illuminating the stone passageway. Her suspicions were confirmed: she hadn’t been in this one before. She had thought she had found every hidden room and passage in Hogwarts, but after almost six years, the castle kept surprising her. She hadn’t even gotten very far into the Forbidden Forest yet. Of course, that adventure could be saved for next year. Even then, she might put it off.
It was a bit odd, when she thought about it. Normally, she would have loved to go traipsing through the Forest. Sneak some food from the kitchen, pack her wand and a warm coat – she had just the one; it made her look a little like a very female, redheaded Napoleon – and spend a night wandering about. In fact, she thought she probably should have done it already. The only thing stopping her was what should have sent her eagerly in: company. She didn’t want to drag Darrin into danger – or more danger than they normally faced – and she was half-sure that if she went into the forest, he would want to go in with her, or after her.
So this is friendship, she thought, glancing over her shoulder. Funny. It feels a lot like being with Fitz. Maybe I’m not in love with that guy after all. That should relieve my parents for all sorts of reasons.
“So, what do you think?” she asked, her voice echoing slightly in the dark hall. She hoped no one would hear her outside, but then adventures were always a little more fun when there was an added element of danger. “Worth the trouble of sneaking out here? That was a great distraction you pulled, by the way.” She turned her attention back to the front. “I vote we press on.” Not that their friendship was a democracy; if he wanted to stay behind, she would just carry on without him.
