To the Daily Prohpet:
As a concerned parent and member of the Wizarding World, I am surprised that the idea of not putting in place measures to keep both are children and our community at large safe from creatures such as werewolves to be both troubling and highly telling. I therefore urge you, and your readers, to think very carefully about what allowing these dangerous beings to roam around the countryside, murdering people and turning others into the monsters that they truly are.
Need I remind you that we even let one of these werewolves into Hogwarts to teach our students? There was no news of any attacks, but how can we trust them to control themselves when apparently they have no idea what they were doing in their wolf form. It is troubling to me that people seem unconcerned about the safety of our children, our very future, and instead they try and insist that werewolves are innocent and simply misunderstood. They try and say the same about serial killers but no one seems to mind putting them to death.
I think allowing trained professionals to hunt those that try and harm society is for the best. I do not suggest however letting any country bumpkin to go out with a wand, or worse a shotgun, and taking justice into their own hands. That would be foolish and dangerous for those around them, and likely not so dangerous for the werewolf. Though allowing Muggles to hunt these creatures down is not a bad idea…
But the fact that there is a debate as to whether or not hunting should be allowed is far more telling than the danger posed to our children and society. It shows that there is a lack of care for such things as public safety within the Ministry. I for one would prefer to be living elsewhere in the world if there were werewolves on the loose. If the Ministry does not wish to see a mass exodus of like-minded individuals as myself, they would be wise to enact legislation in favor of allowing the capture, and hunting, of those dangerous to us all lest more innocent lives are either taken or forever tainted by the stain of such vile blood. Perhaps if they do not act in our best interest, it may be time for us the people to vote them out of office and elect those that are willing to protect us.
And the idea that some people may have of werewolves being "saved" by marrying into Wizarding families is absolute rubbish. No one in his or her right mind would want their child to marry something so dangerous. Why one day, they'd be having a nice Sunday dinner with you and then you will be dinner. Which should be terrifying. If you allow them into society and protect them, who then will protect their innocent victims? Or will you allow them get off scotch-free based on their insistence that they did not know what they were doing? I hope that everyone is as concerned by these possibilities as I am.

Second Place: Remus Lupin (Anonymous)
Winnings: 1 Batch of Polyjuice Potion, ), a free “re-roll” should something befall you in next week’s events (should Remus participate), and 15 Extra Galleons!
Dear Sir or Madame,
I am writing to you about the subject of, if the hunting of werewolves should be legalised or not. If you could please, I wish to remain anonymous for this piece.
Why should we be allowed to be hunted down like some sort of foul beast? Do we not have just as many rights, as the average witch or wizard? I can assure you, that I am as much of a wizard as you. How does killing off our kind prove a point? Do you think killing us will prevent the problem? No, of course not. There are more of us than you will ever know. I personally feel that it should be banned, hunting our kind that is. By encouraging such a sport, you are only making it worse. You are giving werewolves everywhere a reason to hate our kind. I do not see witches and wizards going around killing each other. But at the end of the day aren’t we all the same?
Why should we be the ones to judge others? When we as a society aren’t perfect ourselves? Just because someone has been affected by something out of their control, doesn’t mean they should be treated differently for it. Yes, I’m quite aware of the stereotype the Wizarding World has against Werewolves. That very stereotype I myself have had to live with for many years. What people don’t seem to understand is some choose not to live the way they do. Some were just in an unfortunate time and bad place when the incident occurred. Perhaps due to people not understanding fully how the condition affects us, is what turns a blind eye against out kind.
Yes, I will not deny for one moment that some of us are savages. Cruel, snarling creatures whom kill when it is not needed. These I will agree sometimes perhaps need not be around. But what needs to be understood is we are not in control of such matters. If we could control such an action, do you think we would do such things? Yes, like all people in this world some would choose a great power such as this. Whilst others would stand against the very idea. But what I do not think is right is in fact how we are treated due to that small amount, who choose to embrace that power and use it to harm others. Why should we have to take such punishment for those who abuse it? My condition has stopped me from getting a good paying job, I am not a monster I can assure you. Having to live, as a werewolf is something I would never wish upon anyone.
Personally, I do not enjoy the idea of being judged due to something that is out of my control. Being part of that small minority who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Why should I be treated differently for something I didn’t wish to have inflicted upon me? Why should I have to live in fear of being hurt due to my condition? Perhaps if Wizarding society understood our species better and what it means to be part of it, then we could work together to get a better understanding out to everyone. If we were allowed access to more Wolfsbane at a better price, then we would be able to help start to control the number of attacks that occur. The idea of being marked down as some kind of animal just makes me want to turn away from it all. I do apologise that this may come across as particularly strong, but I do not agree with how we have no choice when it comes to dying under the hands of another.
What I am trying to say is, I think a better understanding of what it means to live, as a Werewolf is needed. However, I can also understand why witches and wizards alike have come to be against us after all these years. Many books that are available for audiences to read are not accurate to what it is really like to be one of our kind. Most I will be so bold to say is rubbish. Unfortunately, being a Werewolf is something that cannot be understood until it is cast upon yourself. The curse is not a pleasant experience I can assure you. Overall, I feel the key would be a better understanding and better access to resources to help control things and give us better rights.

CONTEST TWO: STUDENTS ONLY
Muggle-borns have been a part of the wizarding community for as long as there have been wizards themselves. However, in light of recent events, the issue has come before the court that a Muggle-Born Registration Ledger may be needed in order to protect the safety of those in our community with non-pureblood heritage. Do you believe a Muggle-Born Registration Committee and Ledger will be beneficial or harmful?
YOUR WINNERS ARE:
First Place: Draco Malfoy
Winnings: One Temporary Invisibility Cloak, a free “re-roll” should something befall you in next week’s events (should Draco decide to enter), and 25 Extra Galleons!
Muggleborn Registration would mark the beginning of the end for our current administration. Taking into account the fact that just a few months ago the Ministry lost its Werewolf Registration Act, this new legislature seems excessively counterproductive. Where the loss of the W.R.A. has caused considerable political unrest in light of those who have vanished as a result and, consequently, are now suspects in the most recent and devastating attack on Hogsmeade, a Muggleborn Registration Act would surely cause a political storm the Ministry would not be able to survive in the midst of a war so closely related to blood-politics.
While some may argue that a Muggleborn Registration Act would allow the Ministry to observe the homes of those who would otherwise be counted as targets to those who support pureblood supremacy and its current champions, the fact remains that confidence in the Ministry is currently at an all-time low. Submitting for this registration so soon after the loss of the W.R.A. will cause many to question just where the Ministry’s loyalties lie. While I believe a registration like this could prove useful in the future, it is my firm belief that putting it forward now would be both a foolish and dangerous move politically.
This legislation will be asking people in a targeted minority group to place their names on a list during a time when it is publically known that people of this minority are the most frequent victims of violent attacks. What happens to those who decide not to sign their names to the registry out of fear for their security? Will they be punished? If so, where will the line be drawn, because in such a case is not the Ministry then supporting the oppression of this minority?
To create this registry now is to put the Ministry on the slipperiest slope imaginable in these desperate times. In the long term, if this situation is not handled delicately and put to rest immediately, the Ministry runs the risk of propagating a dangerously fascist society during a time when its resources could be better focused on stopping those who are targeting minority groups, and putting some real effort into the werewolf rights debacle.
Our Ministry needs focus. It needs to unite itself and find where it stands on matters before proposing outrageous new legislature. If the Ministry stands in support of werewolf rights then now is the time to show the wizarding community that they will not be cowed. That they will hear the petitions and will work to provide active and workable solutions to the current state of affairs in regards to the missing werewolves and those recently turned in the latest attack. The same is to be said in the event that the Ministry is against werewolf rights. If this is the stand they choose to take then they must take it and they must act. Allowing this situation to brew upon the doorstep will simply cause the entire tower to crumble.
The same is to be said with regards to Muggleborns. If the Ministry stands in support of protecting Muggleborns then they need to find proactive solutions that don’t involve increasing the risk to this minority group. In the event that the Ministry believes that the Muggleborn populace is worth less than the rest of the wizarding community and deserves to be charted as the werewolves once were, then this Registration Act speaks for itself and I can only imagine the ferocity of the fallout. As one who aspires to work within the Ministry upon graduation, I believe it should be noted that I would appreciate having a place to work in if you don’t mind.
Sincerely,

The attempt to register Muggle-borns for their protection is no doubt well-intentioned and created by Ministry officials who only mean the best for all of us… no really, that’s what they say, so why shouldn’t we believe them? Of course, aside from the problems with privacy (how many people really want others to know their family history aside from those snotty purebloods?), there is a very real risk that this list could fall into the wrong hands, no matter how well it’s been guarded.
We don’t live in the best of all possible worlds, and anyone who tries to convince you otherwise is either lying or repeating the lies of others. If we did live in the best of all possible worlds, we wouldn’t be worried about He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named or anything other than whether there would be a rainbow today, which there would, because it’s a happy sunshiny place filled with sparkles and butterflies. But almost everyone is worried about He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, especially people who are Muggle-born or have Muggle-born friends, given his prejudices against them and against basically anyone who isn’t a pureblood wizard believing in pureblood supremacy.
If a Death Eater or someone who sympathized with Death Eaters were to get their hands on this list, the results could be catastrophic for the wizarding community in England. They would know not only where the Muggle-borns can be found but also where their Muggle families are. This would allow them to hunt down the “undesirable elements of society” (I actually don’t know if they use that phrase, but I’m sure someone has).An attempt at protection could turn into a massacre, and I doubt anyone would want to live with the knowledge that they had caused that, aside from those eager to do the killing.
This sort of registration is happening all over the wizarding world, or at least the parts of it that we hear about in the Prophet. Werewolves are also being registered, presumably for the protection of the non-werewolf population. However, if someone with an anti-werewolf prejudice were to get a hold of this list, it could lead to a potential massacre of the werewolf population.
The thing is, Muggle-borns aren’t necessarily helpless, even if their families are, and werewolves aren’t necessarily bad. One of my friends is Muggle-born, and she’s the best witch I know (if you have to ask who, you really should pay more attention to students); and one of my favorite teachers was a werewolf, and I doubt he’s bitten anyone (again, not giving any names, this time for a different reason). I think the Ministry’s forces would be better suited to keeping the Death Eaters from attacking anyone, no matter their birth, and tracking down people who are actually dangerous, no matter their abilities.
Getting back on the originally assigned topic, a Muggle-born registration (or any sort of registration not carefully thought out) would be more potentially harmful than potentially beneficial. That’s really what matters in the end: potential. Before acting, we ought to ask ourselves what sort of good or harm something will do. Even if our actions will cause good, we should also find out what sort of harm will come of them. If the harm would be greater than the good (or even equal to or less than but still terrible), then we ought not to act, or at least to find a different course of action.
I know I sound more serious at the end of this than I did at the beginning, but this is a serious subject. The Ministry is considering having a great deal of information about a population at risk, available for those with the means to access it. Personally, I think it shouldn’t be done, but then I’m only sixteen and unable to make any sort of officially sanctioned change to the world. I can only hope that, if someone more powerful than I am decides it’s a good idea, they will guard it as carefully as they can and ensure that only the most trustworthy of people can access the information.

Third Place: Hermione Granger
Winnings: A Wizarding Genealogy Guide, a free “re-roll” should something befall you during next week’s events (should Hermione enter), and 10 Extra Galleons!
Historically speaking, muggleborns have been a part of wizarding society since practically the very first pureblooded family rose to power. For many centuries now, they have also been a prominent part of society, their accomplishments and triumphs often overlooked simply because of their heritage. They have always lived side by side with purebloods and half-bloods, and suddenly now that Death Eaters are threatening their safety, someone in the Ministry truly believes that a Muggle-Born Registry will help solve the problem? As a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, I assure you that this is not the case.
No matter what fine intentions the employee has in mind, a Muggle-Born Registry is simply an unwise choice for the Ministry. Interesting and helpful in theory, but messy and discriminating in practice. It is indeed true that Death Eaters appear to be targeting those of “lesser” blood status, such as myself, but a Muggle-Born Registry and Registration Committee could prove disastrous, should it fall into the wrong hands like the Werewolf Registry but a two months ago. We are not magical beings needed to be classified or rounded up like cattle - in fact no creature or person possessing magic ability should be either, but this is not the focus of my dissertation.
For those who may bring up the point of equality - that there ought to be a Muggle-Born Registry simply because there is a Pureblod registry, the latter is purely designed for historical recordkeeping for the benefit of those families wishing to trace their lineage. Muggle-borns and half-bloods technically have no need for this sort of record, seeing as most of them can trace their magical lineage back to either a pureblood family (for which they can investigate the Pureblood Registry) or Muggles further up their family tree - which can be found among Muggle records and not wizarding ones. This eliminates another reason for a Muggle-Born Registry, as I would interpret it.
A registry such as this would also make it much easier for the Ministry to place discriminatory measures on muggleborns simply because of who they were born from, regardless of their magical ability. It would be far too simple for a registry of muggleborns to follow the path that the Werewolf Registry has, and my implication is not just of its recent disappearance. For years, the Ministry has been applying certain bans and protocols that act as buffers to keep werewolves from working and being successful in wizarding society, often turning them out into the Muggle world or, worse yet, turning them on human kind. While muggleborns would not likely start biting wizards and their kin for revenge, I can only foresee the same kind of discrimination and troubles following a Muggle-Born Registry like the Ministry has suggested.
As a muggleborn student who seeks an end to this war just as the Ministry does, I implore you to consider completely dismissing the idea of a Muggle-Born Registry. An action like this, no matter how well-intentioned and benevolent the suggestion might seem, its practice and implementation can only end in disaster for wizards and witches like myself.

To all winners:
Your winnings will be deposited into your vaults no later than August 15th. Should you have any questions, feel free to PM The Phoenix account for answers! Thank you to all who participated! The two first place entries will have interesting effects on the site plot in weeks, and perhaps months, to come. As a note, your characters are permitted to react to these reactions in character in threads from this point onward - though as both adult entries were anonymous, naturally nobody would know who they were unless the character himself has said something personally to your character.
Thank you all again, and prepare yourselves for the event sign-ups on Friday!
